Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Ketamine-Assisted Therapy (KAP)
-
When prescribed and used as directed under the guidance of a trained prescriber and therapist, ketamine is generally safe and well-tolerated. Side effects such as nausea or dizziness may occur, but they are usually mild and temporary. We provide education, preparation, and follow-up to help ensure a safe and supportive experience for those self-administering at home.

-
There are multiple ways to structure a Couples KAP session. Some partners take ketamine together, while others use a "solo dosing" approach, where one partner journeys while the other provides support. Your therapist will help determine the best approach for your unique relationship and therapeutic goals.
-
Couples KAP is ideal for partners who:
Feel emotionally disconnected or stuck in repeating conflict cycles.
Want to deepen their trust, communication, and emotional intimacy.
Have tried traditional therapy but still struggle with unresolved patterns.
Are open to exploring expanded states of awareness for relational healing.
-
Solo Dosing: One partner takes ketamine while the other remains sober and provides support.
Dual Psychedelic Dosing: Both partners take a higher dose to facilitate inward journeys.
Dual Psycholytic Dosing: Both partners take a lower, interaction-friendly dose to enhance dialogue and connection.
Ketamine-Augmented Couples Therapy: A small dose is taken at the beginning of a traditional therapy session to enhance emotional openness.
-
The key difference lies in the dose and the type of experience it facilitates:
Psycholytic Dosing: A low to moderate dose of ketamine is used, allowing partners to stay engaged in conversation while experiencing enhanced emotional openness. This approach supports real-time dialogue, making it ideal for couples who want to process emotions and deepen connection while interacting.
Psychedelic Dosing: A higher dose is used, leading to a more introspective and immersive experience. In this state, partners often journey inward with fewer verbal interactions, gaining deep insights that are later integrated into the relationship.
Both approaches have unique benefits, and your therapist will help determine which dosing method aligns best with your relationship goals. Some couples even alternate between both methods depending on their needs.
-
It's completely normal to have concerns. Many couples choose to start with education and discussion before committing. A therapist can help answer questions and explore whether this approach aligns with your needs. Additionally, solo dosing allows one partner to participate while the other observes and supports.
-
The number of sessions varies based on your needs, but a typical Couples KAP process involves a minimum of 6-8 sessions, including preparation, dosing, and integration.
-
Not necessarily. Many couples use KAP as an accelerator for healing or as a supplement to ongoing couples therapy. The insights gained during KAP can enhance and deepen traditional relational work.
-
The integration process is key. After a dosing session, you and your therapist will reflect on what emerged, process any breakthroughs, and apply the insights to your everyday relationship. Couples often find that KAP unlocks new ways of communicating, leading to lasting transformation.
-
Ketamine is well-researched and considered safe when used in a therapeutic setting. Potential side effects may include mild dizziness, nausea, or dissociation, but these are temporary. A thorough screening ensures that it is a good fit for you and your partner.

Insurance coverage for Couples Therapy and Couples Ketamine-Assisted Therapy (KAP) depends on your plan and how the therapy is structured:
Traditional Couples Therapy: Most insurance plans do not cover couples counseling when it focuses on relationship concerns (e.g., communication issues, conflict resolution, or improving intimacy). However, if one partner has a mental health diagnosis (e.g., anxiety, depression, PTSD) and couples therapy is used to support their treatment, some insurance plans may cover it under CPT code 90847 (family therapy with the identified patient present).
Ketamine-Assisted Therapy (KAP): Insurance typically does not cover KAP because ketamine is considered an off-label treatment. However, some components—such as standard psychotherapy sessions—may be eligible for out-of-network reimbursement.
Superbills & Out-of-Network Benefits: If your therapist is out-of-network, you may be able to submit a superbill for the therapy portion of treatment, though ketamine-related costs are usually not reimbursable.
HSA/FSA Payments: Many clients use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to help cover the cost of KAP or couples therapy.
Before starting therapy, it’s best to check with your insurance provider to understand what’s covered under your plan
